The Purple Bins Have Arrived!

people in front of purple glass recycling bin

Beginning Sept. 22, customers going to James City County’s three Convenience Centers will be able to recycle their glass in new purple bins donated by O-I Glass. Once full, the glass collected in the purple bins will be delivered directly to the O-I Glass plant in Toano, replacing raw materials in their glass production process.

Empty and rinsed bottles and jars of all colors can be recycled. Labels and lids can remain on the containers. Ceramics and porcelain, mirrors, lamps and bulbs, windows or glass sheets and Pyrex cannot be recycled.

Look for the purple collections bins at:

  • Jolly Pond Convenience Center, 1204 Jolly Pond Road
  • Tewning Road Convenience Center: 117 Tewning Road
  • Toano Convenience Center: 185 Industrial Boulevard

Glass may still be placed in curbside containers; however, only glass collected in the purple bins will go directly to O-I Glass. When glass in mixed in with single-stream recycling it can break during transport and processing. This makes it difficult to separate from other materials, potentially contaminating all of the commodities.

O-I Glass will make a charitable donation to the United Way based on the amount of glass that it receives from James City County. This pilot program has no additional cost implications to the County.
