Firearm Permits

Any person 21 years of age or older may apply to the Clerk of the Circuit Court for a 5-year permit to carry a concealed handgun.

For-Hire Certificates & Taxi Permits

County Code Chapter 21 – Taxicabs and other For-Hire Vehicles requires annual certification for all taxi and for-hire vehicle businesses and annual permitting for all taxi and for-hire drivers. Both processes are handled by James City County Police Department. The application for a taxi or for-hire vehicle business certification (PDF) and annual permit for a taxi/for-hire driver (PDF) are available online. Parking Permits

James City County does not issue parking permits at this time, but the City of Williamsburg does have parking restrictions.

Precious Metal Recycling Permits

Precious Metal Recycling Permits authorize businesses in James City County to purchase precious metals such as gold and silver from the public. Any business interested in purchasing precious metals is required to have a precious metals permit. For more information about obtaining a permit, please contact Inv. Solicitation Permits

County Code Chapter 18 - Solicitation for Non-charitable Purposes allows a person to apply for a Solicitation Permit (PDF). Follow the steps spelled out in the information pages in the application. Once the application is complete, submit it to the James City County Police Department.
