VA's Initiative for Education and Work

About the Program

The Employment Services Program assists mandatory and voluntary Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients to gain employment. The program helps customers develop and broaden job skills that will enable them to work and become self sufficient. Participants will be assessed for job readiness to determine their employment needs.

Emphasis is placed on how to maintain employment as well as career advancement. Family Services Specialists counsel customers on an ongoing basis to help them deal with the conflicts that may arise from employment and give them the support and encouragement needed to remain on the job. Supportive services such as child care and transportation are available to eligible individuals. The goal of the program is for customers to be able to support their families without receiving public assistance.
