Concealed Handgun Permits
First Time Applicants
Applications for Concealed Handgun permits are available on the Virginia State Police website (can be completed on the site and then print all 4 pages to bring with you) at no cost. If you do not have an application the Clerk's Office will print one for you at a fee of $2.00.
First time applications must be presented in person at the Clerk's Office in the locality in which you reside. You will need to include proof of firearms training; acceptable types are listed in Virginia Code §18.2-308-02. The fee is $26.00 (cash, check or credit) and you will be issued a plastic card with your photo (optional) which can also serve as an additional form of identification.
Virginia Code §18.2-308.02 states that any person at least 21 years old may apply in writing to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County of residence, or if a member of the United States armed forces, the County in which he or she is billeted, for a 5-year permit to carry a concealed handgun.
Renewal Applications
Applications are found at the Virginia State Police website (can be completed on the site and then print all 4 pages to bring with you) at no cost. If you do not have an application the Clerk's Office will print one for you at a fee of $2.00. You can submit your renewal application with a copy of your current concealed handgun permit and/or previous firearms training, a check for $26.00, and a copy of your driver's license through the mail or in person. Applications that are mailed in will not have a photo on the issued permit, you must come to the office for a photo.Please note that this office stops processing concealed handgun permits at 3:45 p.m. to ensure all photographs and signatures related to the permits are finalized by close of business.
Please allow 45 days for a comprehensive criminal history check to be completed.
Your permit will be mailed to the address listed on your application if granted. If denied, a Court Order so stating will be mailed. If additional information is needed for processing you will be contacted at the telephone number listed on your application – therefore, please take care to complete your application legibly.
