In addition to the local choices highlighted below, James City County has easy access to Virginia Beach and is less than a day from many other East Coast beaches. Skiing, hiking, camping, and whitewater excursions in the Blue Ridge Mountains are just a few hours away to the west. And thanks to a mild, four-season climate, you can enjoy many of your favorite activities virtually year-round.

James City County Parks

James City County is home to 15 magnificent parks, offering a wide range of activities and amenities for people of all ages.  From camping to basketball to swinging on a jungle gym, there is more than 1,500 acres to enjoy and explore.  James City County’s Parks & Recreation Department also offers a large selection of fun and educational sports and activities.

Other regional parks include: York River State Park, First Landing State Park, False Cape State Park, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and Plum Tree Island National Wildlife Refuge.

York and James Rivers

Boating and water sports enthusiast have access to a number of public and private marinas, boat launch facilities, and beaches on both the James and York Rivers. The Chesapeake Bay, Intercoastal Canal, and Atlantic Ocean are easily accessible by car or boat. Anglers can enjoy some of the finest fishing in the East.

Championship Golf

With nearly a dozen local courses to choose from, James City County could easily be a golfer’s paradise. Area golf courses present demanding yet rewarding challenges to golfers of all skill levels. Each year, the LPGA Tour makes a stop at Kingsmill’s River Course for the Kingsmill Championship. Colonial Williamsburg’s legendary Golden Horseshoe golf courses are rated 4½ stars by Golf Digest.
